Measuring device
NOOS-e (Nuisance Odor Olfactometry System – electronic) is an electronic device for measuring the strength of odors, utilizing nonspecific detectors of gases and chemical compounds. Signals from the detectors are processed with the use of a special algorithm producing results expressed in European odor units per cubic meter [ouE/m3]. The selection of detectors is unique for each specific system. As a standard, the concentrations of particular gases may also be read, depending on the types of detectors used.
The NOOS-e system comprises:
A box with a measuring assembly for a universal 12V DC power supply unit, and the NOOS-e Manager software.
Optionally, the system may be used together with a wireless data transmission system and/or a weather station.

Accessories
Weather station
A weather station situated near the sampling location is an indispensable component of the NOOS-e system if the odor strength signal is to be used for creating odor dispersion profiles. It enables reliable monitoring of odor dispersion in real time and forecasting the strength of odors emitted by sources sensitive to weather conditions. A signal from the station may be transmitted directly to the device’s onboard computer or to a PC for further processing.
Installation accessories
The scope of installation accessories delivery is agreed upon directly with the user. It may cover: mounting bolts, a pole for system installation, a rain guard, and other necessary accessories.
PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter sensor
The NOOS-e system may be equipped with a sensor for measuring the quantity of particulate matter suspended in the air, that is the so-called PM 2.5 and PM10 parameters. Particulate matter is a pollutant harmful to the environment and to human health, having a direct impact on the quality and length of life.
GSM modem for data transmission
In locations where Ethernet is unavailable, a modem with a GSM card can be installed for signal transmission purposes.
Software
The system comes with pre-installed NOOS-e Manager software for controlling the system, processing signals from detectors, and providing results in European odor units per cubic meter (ouE/m3).
User panel is delivered in one of two versions: 1) BASIC - an odour strength and time is presented, 2) PRO - an odour strength and time is presented along with detected gases concentration. Optionally, a meteorological data and particles concentration PM2,5 and PM10 can be presented.
The NOOS-e system may work with developed by third parties, commercially available programs for air-mass monitoring, for the purpose of creating nuisance odor dispersion models.
Data transmission and recording
Data is recorded on-line in real time. Signals from the incorporated detectors are recorded together with date and time.
The NOOS-e system is ready for on-line data transmission over a local Ethernet or a GSM network. As a standard, the system comes with a memory card for recording the measurement results. That enables periodic downloads of data from locations for which on-line transmission is not required.
Locations and applications
The NOOS-e system is capable of measuring the strength of odors in open areas, emitted from large-area sources (landfills, wastewater treatment plants, poultry farms, pig farms, odor-emitting installations etc.), and in indoor locations, emitted from point sources (buildings, enclosed sheds, etc.). For each such a location a different, specific group of detectors is selected in order to ensure the most reliable measurements. NOOS-e is an excellent device for on-line odor monitoring at industrial plants that intend to support decisions regarding BAT through continuous monitoring, for companies following social responsibility policies, and for managers of facilities that emit nuisance odors.
Combined with a weather station and with software for calculating pollutants dispersion in the air, the system may be a very useful tool for managing such facilities, and may constitute an important component of communication with the community.
Measurements reliability
Even though the NOOS-e electronic olfactometer does not comply with the EN13725 standard, the achievable accuracy of measurements is very high. The NOOS-e system undergoes three-stage calibration.
