Measurements and surveys

We specialize in field measurements of odor strength generated by various types of point and surface sources, industrial installations such as sewage treatment plants, landfills, piggeries, farms and others.

Environmental measurements

We assess the strength of odors from various types of industrial installations, agriculture, sewage treatment plants, landfills, composting plants, and many others.

Environmental measurements may be required for:

 (1) Field monitoring – Monitoring of odors in situations of supplies of materials, processes generating odors, transient gas emissions, carried out in a particular, specific location, e.g. corridors, access roads, storage areas, by fence lines, etc.

 (2) Random monitoring – “random inspections”. Such inspections lead to the collection of data which can then be correlated with the meteorological data covering the measurement site.

 (3) Scheduled monitoring – A well scheduled monitoring can be narrowed to a daily walk or drive around the site once or several times a day.

 (4) Survey of odor generating sites – Assessment of odor generating sites and environmental impacts may be required for obtaining or renewing permits.

 (5) Residential monitoring – The introduction of odor monitoring in the place of residence can be part of the standard municipal action. The primary objective of monitoring residential areas is to collect information, through accurate recording of the results, about the actual status and conditions of residence.

 (6) Emergencies – The use of the hotline for notification of incidents can be a common method of obtaining information about the sudden appearance of odors.

 (7) Odor control – Standard and specialized models for the spread of odors make it possible to predict the transmission of odors by the wind and their strength. The so-called "plume profiling" protocol complements and calibrates these models.

No project is too small or too big. We pay due attention to each task, discussing all project stages with our customers.

If necessary, we can also carry out odor measurements according to EN 13725 as a part of a project and then continue monitoring with the use of our screening systems. This solution significantly reduces the monitoring costs.

Testing methods

We adapt individually the best screening test methods to the environmental conditions and the expectations of the customer. The aim is to obtain through field measurements results that correspond as closely as possible to the quality of laboratory test results.

In our surveys, we use:

- on-line field monitoring with the use of NOOS-e electronic olfactometer

- field measurements with the Nasal Ranger® field olfactometer.

- GC-MS laboratory tests

- dynamic olfactometric laboratory tests according to the EN13725 standard

Risk management

The impact of odors on the environment is one of the most important elements of the complex process of environmental impact and environmental and health risk assessment. Our measurements provide reliable and essential information on odor strength, frequency, duration and intensity. These results may form the basis for further environmental studies.

Dispersion Models

The odorant plume model is identical to the plume model for all other air pollutants. The basis for calculations is a simplified model of air pollution plume, shaped by wind and diffusion processes. The odorant plume modeling is expressed in European odor units (ouE).

Odor management

Field monitoring has major advantages over instantaneous laboratory measurements. Apart from economic aspects (field monitoring is cheaper than laboratory methods), we practically obtain results in real time, which allows us to make appropriate decisions in odor management, taking into account environmental impact, company needs or social responsibility issues.
